"TOP TALK"-November 2004
Nick's Notes: Sorghum Seminars
Sorghum production is becoming more and more popular as well as important to southwest Nebraska. In the last two years, the amount of sorghum production has doubled. Through our travels in the area, we have had many questions brought to our attention concerning sorghum production.
Producers are facing a number of battles in being productive and profitable in their business. One way to make this work is by diversifying their crop production.
The Nebraska Grain Sorghum producer’s association has set up a series of seminars throughout the state. The first meeting will be in McCook on January 11, 2005 at the Red Willow County Fair Building from 8:30 to 3:30 CT. Lunch will be served.
Some things that will be covered at the seminar are marketing outlook, pricing strategies, long term outlook of weather, soil analysis and nitrogen application recommendations.
Many people think that this time of year is to look back on what has happened over the past growing season. This is true, but it is also a time to look into the future and start taking action on next year’s strategies.
If you have any questions on the meeting, please stop by or give us a call. Shawn or I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

FSA Kids is an awesome animated site the kids will learn and play on for hours. Go meet “Zip” at Agventure to learn about the farm or the “Hay Now Quiz Show” where kids can be quizzed on fun ag facts. You can also print out fun coloring pages for kids to young to surf the web. Join in the fun!
Farm Assist is a web site designed by Syngenta to help you, the grower, make decisions with timely, credible knowledge. Featuring the latest ag news and markets, and provides neat tools such as a Corn Planting Calculator and a Pest Library. It’s an easy site to use and get around on, go take a look!
With the recent talks of soy bean rust being more wide spread than initially thought, now would be a good time for growers to log on to do a little research. It’s a site within Farm Assist that may answer some of those lingering questions. Be prepared with knowledge about soybean rust and how to treat it.
Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving, wherever it may take you. Whether that be across the country to see family or down a 30 inch row, may your trip be enjoyable and a safe one.
Corn harvest is coming along slower than we all would like, I know, but there are good yields out there to find. Moisture is our biggest enemy, whether it be in the corn or precipitation falling to the ground. But still, it’s a little hard to complain about wet weather as we build profile for next year.
I hate to think about next year already, but the time is coming. We need to start planning for it. We can start with plan A and finalize with Z at a later date. It is time to talk about your 2005 fertilizer and chemical needs. Give Nick or I a call and we will set up an appointment to sit down and work on your program.
Sincerely,
Shawn Jones
