QUILT™ Fungicide: Label Changes
Ok so we had to wait on winter but it finally showed up! It only took four months and it came with a vengeance. Wheat growers know that it also brought some much needed moisture.
Wheat is in a critical stage of its production right now. The tillering process is taking place and it is very critical to feed these tillers so they will produce a head. This is an excellent time to take care of the weeds and any insects that may have invaded your field. Cutworms can be a big problem in wheat, one worm can start working in a row and do a lot of damage so be on the look out.
Top-dressing wheat is a very important part of producing a good wheat crop. Timely fertilizer along with a good weed control programs is a must when it comes to raising good quality wheat. Cheat and jointed goat grass can be a big problem in winter wheat. There are not many chemicals that can take care of these specific weeds. Beyond is a great tool for Clearfield Wheat Growers fighting control of Cheat Grass and Jointed Goat Grass. Keep in mind, it is more economical to take care of a weed control problem now vs. later when weeds are more mature. Other options are Amber and Ally, both give you a good residual control on weeds before they become a problem.
Call Top Hat when you are ready to put together a weed control program, we’re here to help.

Central Nebraska alfalfa producers are finding army cutworms infesting some of their fields. The number found in most cases are way above threshold levels for treatment. The size of these cutworms range from 1/2-3/4 inch in length. I’m not sure how widespread this pest will be, but this is a good indicator that this problem may also infest fields in SW Nebraska.
Army cutworm moths target bare fields in the fall to lay their eggs. Fields where a late cutting was taken might be a good place to start scouting for this pest. So far I haven’t found cutworms in the fields I’ve scouted, but we need to continue to be aware of this potential problem. There are many treatments available; for example, Mustang Max at a 2oz rate will give you excellent control of this pest.
If you have questions, or have a field that needs scouted, give us a call.
The recently updated Fertilizer Institute website offers a wealth of information and facts about fertilizer. They have special interests in methamphetamine legislation, nurse tanks, and educating the greater public. If you want to stay up to date on these issues in legislation, this is a great resource.
