MIKE’S MEMO:  HAY Growers!

HAY growers or ALFALFA producers, the time has come to start thinking about kicking your alfalfa production into gear.

Nutrient removal from alfalfa is high because most of the above ground plant is harvested several times during the growing season.  Therefore, supplying adequate nutrients to the crop is important.  Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, zinc, and boron have been shown in research to increase yields.

How much of these nutrients is recommended?  Alfalfa will remove about 55lbs of nitrogen/ton of dry hay harvested.  Fortunately alfalfa makes its own nitrogen so addition of this nutrient is not recommended.  Phosphourus is removed at a rate of 10lbs/ton of dry hay harvested.  This gives us a good base to establish how much phosphorus is needed to maintain your alfalfa.  Applying a quality blend of nutrients like KQ555 or KQ555B in early to mid March can have your alfalfa coming out of dormancy healthy and ready for top production this summer.

This is also an excellent time to apply some herbicide to your alfalfa to control winter annuals before it breaks dormancy.

NICK’S NOTES

Hello everyone, I would like to start off by telling everyone thanks for coming in and being patient during the prepay season. It was a productive and yet challenging time. This year is starting off fairly intense and may be one of the biggest challenges in crop production that we have yet to overcome.

Challenging as this may be, Top Hat has strived to be a leader in finding new tools customers can use to become as efficient as possible. We realize that minimizing trips across the field is one way to cut cost in production.

Therefore, Top Hat recently acquired four chemigation units to provide a valuable tool to you. These units are  used to help apply pesticides through the pivot during regular irrigation scheduling.  These units will chemigate both insecticides and herbicides that are labeled for this type of application. Please contact your local NRD for information on the regulations, rules, and inspection of your irrigation system.

Top Hat is pleased to provide this added service to our growers. If you wish to know more about this service or any other products feel free to contact us at anytime.
