NICK'S NOTES

It’s time to plant corn and to make plans on your chemical programs. The Roundup Ready program is a good tool in corn production and has many benefits.

Roundup is one of the cheapest programs available today. At the same time I think its important to make sure we look at the benefits of pre-emergence in the Roundup Ready program. Pre-emergence chemical will aid in the control or early weed pressure when crops are just emerging from the ground. This is important because it ensures that we will have good emergence and stand counts. Many pre-emergence programs available today have made it beneficial to put products with the Roundup Ready program. Early weed development and competition is becoming more prevalent each year.

Many chemical companies like Syngenta, Dupont, BASF, Dow Agri-Science, and Monsanto are offering incentives on the second trip of Roundup if weeds are posing a problem in the corn field. I believe this is a good deal. As producers we need to look at these programs and all our options.

Stop by Top Hat or give us a call to see which program would work best for your operation.

"Yucca can be a large problem for many pastures in our area."

In 2005 we treated about 500 acres for control. At this time it is looking like we have had good results. We control at the time the flower comes out, usually toward the end of May or beginning of June. This treatment will control sand sage and many other broadleaf weeds.

With the drought, pastures are being used hard and weeds have a stronger foothold. Call us to discuss chemical, cost, timing, etc.

Thanks,
Stan Jones

Saving Fuel

The first and most important step in saving fuel used for field operations is to ask “Is this operation really necessary? Will I recoup benefits in excess of the costs?”

Energy savings can be significant when best conservation practices are used as well as proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Energy use is a significant component of crop production and it should be considered a key production input.

Dry Conditions & Soil Applied Herbicides               By Kevin Reiss of Syngenta

As corn planting begins, most growers will have a pre-emergent soil herbicide applied to their crop. Following application, the herbicide will have a 10 day window to become incorporated. Rainfall or irrigation is required within this window to facilitate weed control.

The drought we have experienced over the past several years has made weed control a real challenge. Despite these struggles, the impact early season weed control has on yield makes this necessary.

Metolachlor based herbicides such as Bicep II Magnum, Dual Magnum, and Lumax require 3/4” to 1” of moisture to insure adequate weed control. Less than this amount during this 10 day period can result in reduced performance.

Although with our limited water resources it can be a difficult decision to irrigate. At this time the money invested in these products makes it a worth while investment.
