SEED TREATMENTS: What's the Difference?

Top Hat carries KickStart and KickStart VP. The ingredients and differences are as follows.

KICKSTART is a Vitavax- Diazinon - Lindane Seed Treatment. It’s a ready to use dust based product especially formulated for seed treatment at planting time. This product is formulated to help lubricate the planter box and assure a smooth even flow to the furrow. It contains the systemic fungicide, Vitavax, for protection of seeds from seed and seedling diseases; Diazinon for protection against seed corn beetles and seed corn maggots; and Lindane for protection against wireworms. Because of recent Diazinon label changes, this product is being discontinued. Sales will be allowed until existing inventories are used and then the label will be withdrawn. Top Hat currently has a limited supply of KICKSTART (canisters) in inventory.

KICKSTART VP - Vitavax Permethrin is labeled for use on Field Corn, Sweet Corn, Popcorn and Soybeans. It combines the proven performance of Vitavax fungicide for protection of seed and seedling diseases such as Damping-Off, Seed Decay and Seedling Blight; with permethrin insecticide for protection against Seed Corn Beetle, Seed corn Maggots and Wireworms. Permethrin, which is the active ingredient in Pounce Insecticide, offers better worker/applicator safety when used on the seed at planting time.

KICKSTART VP is formulated with talc to help lubricate the planter box to assure smooth even flow to the furrow. Additional talc can be added, but many times may not be necessary. John Deere recommends 1/2 cup of talc be added to the planter box. Do not add more talc than is recommended. Overuse of talc can lead to a buildup of excess material in the planter box. Remember to only add talc after the seed treatment has been applied and mixed. KICKSTART VP seed treatment on the seed will not be blown off or pulled off by the vacuum meter.

Remember:

1)        Add seed treatment first

2)        Mix thoroughly

3)        Add talc (if required & do not over apply) and mix.

KICKSTART VP is available in 1.5 oz canisters and 4# pails. The pail package has a measuring device and will treat up to 42 bags of corn seed.

NICK'S NOTES

To all producers in the great world of agriculture.  I am starting to get an urge that I always get this time of year.  The urgency that things need done and the feeling that there’s not a sufficient amount of hours in the day  to get those things done.  I like to link this to a little word called “stress”, which  all of us experience in some way at this time of year!

Planting season is just around the corner, a lot of the potatoes have been planted and have begun their journey to fall.  Corn isn't  too far behind and planters will soon be going in full force.  I want to wish all of you good luck as ground work begins this spring.  But I also want to point out that safety is not luck; so when you walk out of the house to jump into the planter, remember to take a few moments to look  at a few things and be safe.  Make sure everything is ready for the day, including you!  The feeling of confidence, that everything is in good condition and working properly, is pretty rewarding.

Shawn and I hope to catch up and visit with a few of you on our little excursions around the area this spring.  So be thinking of any questions that you may have and remember to come talk with us now before planting so we can put a game plan together.

Tip off is here, everyone’s on the court and it’s time to play ball.  Give us a call at Top Hat and we’ll help you find a best fit for your operation this coming year.

“Game On!”

WHITE WHEAT PLANNING

Now is the time to start planning your wheat fungicide application!

The supply of fungicide could be a concern due to the pressure from chemical being stored for the soybean rust scare.  We should prepare ourselves for the impact of a possible shortage of fungicide.

Top Hat would like to visit with you, our valued customer, about fungicide needs so we can better fill your fungicide requests in the near future.

Please call and visit with Stan or Shawn today
